Know the Signs

When should I call an electrician about a problem?

Call when your electrical system starts acting differently than it used to. Flickering lights, breakers that trip repeatedly, outlets that have gone dead, switches that feel warm, or a faint burning smell you cannot place. None of these are normal, and all of them have a cause that can be found. Some causes are minor. The ones involving heat, loose connections behind walls, or failing breakers, are not, and waiting rarely makes them cheaper.

Here is our honest rule of thumb: you do not need to know whether it is serious. That is our job. Tell us what you are seeing and we will tell you plainly whether it can wait for a scheduled visit or needs someone out now.

Do Not Wait

What counts as an electrical emergency?

Power loss, burning smells, sparking outlets, or a tripped main breaker. If you are seeing any of these, stop using the affected circuit and call (608) 772-2456 anytime. We offer 24/7 emergency service for exactly these situations. What you should not do is open the panel or start pulling devices apart yourself. Finding live faults is a licensed electrician's job, and it is dangerous work for anyone else.

Our Approach

How do you find an electrical fault?

Methodically, not by swapping parts and hoping. We start with what you have noticed, because when and where a problem shows up says a lot about where it lives. From there we trace the affected circuit, isolate sections, and test until the fault has nowhere left to hide. Circuit tracing and fault detection are the core of this service, and it is work we do every week.

The fix gets explained before it happens, in plain language, with the price in writing. And what we find, you keep: if the real culprit turns out to be an aging panel, we will say so and lay out what a panel upgrade involves rather than patching around it. If the symptom is a lighting circuit that was never wired right, our lighting team can rebuild it properly.

Pricing Factors

What affects the cost of troubleshooting?

Mostly how deep the fault is hiding. A problem that reveals itself at the first outlet is a quick visit; an intermittent fault buried in a long circuit takes more tracing. Whether the fix is a single connection or a rebuild of part of the circuit matters too. Either way, you get a straight diagnosis, a written quote before repair work begins, and no hourly padding.

FAQ

Troubleshooting questions, answered

Why does my breaker keep tripping?

A breaker that trips is doing its job: cutting power because something is wrong, usually an overloaded circuit or a fault somewhere along it. One trip after running too much at once is normal. A breaker that trips again and again is telling you the circuit needs attention, and resetting it over and over is not a fix. We trace the circuit and find the actual cause.

One outlet stopped working. Is that serious?

It can be. Sometimes it is a tripped GFCI upstream, and sometimes it is a failing connection inside the box, which generates heat where you cannot see it. If an outlet is dead, discolored, or warm to the touch, stop using it and have it checked.

What should I do if I smell something burning near an outlet or the panel?

Treat it as urgent. Stop using the circuit and call us right away at (608) 772-2456. Burning smells, sparking outlets, and a tripped main breaker are exactly the situations our emergency service exists for, and we answer anytime.

Are flickering lights dangerous?

Sometimes no, sometimes yes, and you cannot tell from the couch. A single lamp flickering is probably its bulb. Lights flickering across a room or the whole house can mean a loose or failing connection, which is a fire risk worth taking seriously. That pattern is worth a call.

Do you do electrical safety inspections?

Yes. Safety inspections are part of our troubleshooting service. If you just bought an older home or something about your electrical simply feels off, we will go through it and give you a straight report on what is fine and what needs work.
